LANSERE Evgeny Evgenievich (1875, Pavlovsk - 1946) graphic artist and painter, people's artist of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (1945). He was a son of the sculptor E. A. Lansere, brother of N. E. Lansere and Z. E. Serebryakova. He lived in St. Petersburg from 1892; living at 20/17 Makarova Embankment from 1905 to 1917. He studied at the School of Drawing of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts (1892-95) and at private academies in Paris (1895-98). He was a member of the Academy of Arts from 1912. In 1899 he became a member of the World of Art. He was under the influence of Alexander N. Benois taking a keen sense of style and passeisme from him. He became famous as an illustrator, Tsar's Hunt in Rus by N. I. Kutepov, 1902; Tsarskoe Selo in the reign of Empress Elizaveta Petrovna by Alexander N. Benois, 1910; Hadji-Murat by Leo Tolstoy, 1912-15). He was graphical designer of the journal Mir Iskusstva in 1905-08, and contributed to the political-satirical magazins Zhupel and Adskaya Pochta. He executed easel works in gouache and tempera which include exquisite historical stylizations recreating the image of 18th century St. Petersburg (Nikolsky Market in Petersburg, 1901, exhibited in the State Tretyakov Gallery; Petersburg at the Beginning of the 18th Century, 1906, on exhibition at the State Russian Museum etc.). He was in charge of the artistic unit of the Imperial Porcelain Factory in 1912-14. He worked as an artist for the Informational Bureau of the Army of A. I. Denikin in 1918-19. He lived in Tbilisi from 1920 to 1934 and in Moscow from 1934. He taught at the All-Russian Academy of Arts in Leningrad in 1934-38. He was awarded Stalin Prize in 1943.
