Matyushin M.V. (1861-1934), Artist, Composer

MATYUSHIN Mikhail Vasilievich (1861-1934, Leningrad) artist, violinist, composer. He was an outstanding figure of the Petersburg artistic avant-guard. He graduated from the Moscow Conservatoire in 1881, played in the Petersburg Court Orchestra in 1881-1913. He was trained at the School of Drawing of the Artists Encouragement Fund in 1894-98, at the studio of Y. F. Tsionglinsky in 1903-05, at the school of E. N. Zvantseva in 1906-08, under M. V. Dobuzhinsky and L. S. Bakst. He was one of the initiators of the society Union of Youth (1910), he published futuristic books. He composed the music for the plays by E. G. Guro and for the opera Victory over the Sun (the text by A. E. Kruchenykh, design by K. S. Malevich, staged in 1913 in Luna Park). Matyushin adhered to impressionist style in his early paintings, later he developed his own theory of organic culture based on a broadened perception of space and color. He expressed his ideas in programme articles Experience of the Artist of the New Dimension, Experience of the New Perception of Space, Regularity of Convertibility of Colour Connections etc. He taught at the Academy of Arts from 1918 to 1926. He was in charge of the Department of Organic Culture at the Institute of Artistic Culture from 1923 to 1926. His disciples and followers comprised the group Zorved, formed in 1923, and the Collective of Broadened Observation, otherwise known as KORN, founded in 1930. He lived on 10 Pesochnaya Street (today Professora Popova Street) from 1912; from 1923, he lived on 19 Literatorov Street. He was buried near the station Martyshkino.
