REPIN Ilya Efimovich (1844-1930) was an artist, graphic artist and teacher. He lived in St. Petersburg from 1863. He studied at the School of Drawing at the Artists Encouragement Fund in 1863 under I. N. Kramskoy and at the Academy of Arts from 1864 to 1871 under P. V. Basin, F. A. Bruni and T. A. Neff; in 1873-76, he was sent as a retainer of the Academy to Italy and France. From 1893 to 1907, he taught at the Academy of Arts; was a professor and head of the workshop, from 1893 he was a full member of the Academy of Arts, and in 1898-99 was rector. In the 1890s, he taught at the Princess M. K. Tenisheva Art School. From 1878, he was a member of the Fellowship of Travelling Art Exhibitions. He was a head of the Russian school of realistic painting. He created epic paintings touching upon contemporary public and historical themes, as seen in such paintings as the Barge Haulers on the Volga, 1870-73 People from Zaporozhye are writing a letter to the Turkish Sultan, 1878-91; Grand Meeting of the State Assembly on 7 May, 1901, 1901-03, all of which are in the State Russian Museum; The Religious Procession in Kursk Province, 1880-83; Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan, 1885, both are exhibited in the State Tretyakov Gallery. He was a master of psychological portraits as demonstrated in his portraits of V. V. Stasov, 1883 and A. G. Rubinstein, 1887, which are both displayed in the State Russian Museum; Leo Tolstoy, 1887, M. P. Mussorgsky, 1881, which are in the State Tretyakov Gallery. He executed portraits of Emperor Nicholas II in 1895 and 1896; both are in the State Russian Museum. He also did pencil sketches of scenes of Petersburg streets and everyday life: Nevsky Prospect, At Dominik's Place - 1887, held in the State Russian Museum. He wrote many articles about art and his memoirs. From 1903, he lived in Kuokkala; from 1948, he lived in the village Repino in Leningrad Region, in the estate Penaty purchased by him in 1899 where he was buried. In April 1918, he found himself cut of from Russia by the Finnish boundary. He did not accept the political regime of the USSR and rejected official proposals return to his motherland (1926). In 1952, Solovyevsky Lane and Kalinkina Square were renamed after Repin. There is a memorial plaque on the house where Repin lived in 1882-95 (3/5 Repina Square), in the conference hall of the Academy of Arts (17 Universitetskaya Embankment) and on the wall of the Repino Railway Station. Monuments to Repin were installed on Primorskoe Highway, near Repino Station (1957, sculptor M. G. Manizer) and in Rumyantsevsky Garden (sculptor Manizer, 1951, installed in 1999). The Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture was named after Repin in 1944. The State Repin Memorial Prize of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic was given in 1965-90 for achievements in fine art.
