SADOVNIKOV Vasily Semenovich (1800-1879, St. Petersburg) graphic artist, water colour painter. He was a brother of P. S. Sadovnikov. He came from a family of serfs. He painted documental and at the same time poetic views of St. Petersburg and its outskirts. The two-part Panorama of Nevsky Prospect consisting of water-colour, executed in the 1830s and displayed in the State Russian Museum, reproduced both sides of the prospect from the Main Admiralty to Fontanka River in exquisite detail. The total length of the painting is 15.65 metres, the height is 0.15 metres; both parts were made into lithographs in 1830 and in 1835. This painting is the most famous of his works and is viewed as a historical-artistic document of Pushkin's epoch. In 1862, he executed a panorama of St. Petersburg from Pulkovsky Heights for the competitive album for the 100th anniversary of the Academy of Arts. From the 1840s, he undertook many orders from the Imperial Court mainly consisting of views of the Winter Palace and other suburban palaces. He was one of the first to start painting interiors, such as the halls of Yusupov Palace on Moika River Embankment, 1852-54. He was buried at Mitrofanyevskoe Cemetery, the tombstone has not survived.
