ANDZHAN Anton Iosifovich (1892-1974), make-up artist, Honoured Worker of Culture of the RSFSR (1967). He worked as a make-up artist in St. Petersburg’s theatres and worked on the most prominent actors of the Alexandrinsky Theatre. In 1924, he started to work in the film industry and took part in production of 60 films including the trilogy about Maxim (directed by Grigory Kozintsev and Leonid Trauberg), Deputy from the Baltics (directed by Iosif Heifits and Alexander Zarkhi), and Masquerade (directed by Sergey Gerasimov). Historical portrait make-up was the Andzhan’s main strength: Nikolay Simonov as Peter the Great (Peter I directed by Vladimir Petrov), Boris Babochkin as Chapayev (Chapayev directed by Vasilyev brothers), Boris Shchukin as Lenin (Lenin in October and Lenin in 1918, both directed by Mikhail Romm). He wrote the book Make-up in Films. (Moscow, 1957, in co-ordination with Yu. Volchanetsky) After the war, he lived and worked in Moscow. In 1949 he was awarded the Stalin Prize.
