VYALTSEVA (married name Biskupskaya) Anastasiya Dmitrievna (1871-1913, St. Petersburg), operetta and opera (mezzo-soprano) singer, variety actress. Studied singing in St. Petersburg under S. M. Sonki. Started her stage career in Kiev, where she worked as an extra for S.S. Lenchevsky's ballet company (1887). In 1893, she performed with the Aquarium Moscow Theatre's operetta troupe, then in S.M. Palm's troupe (initially in Moscow, then in St. Petersburg). In 1897, she made a name for herself as a singer of Gypsy romances. Toured a lot through the provinces. Along with concerts, she continued performing in operettas (Saffi in The Gypsy Baron by J. Strauss, Perichole and Helen in La Perichole and La Belle Helene (The Fair Helen) by J. Offenbach, Clarette in La Fille de Madame Angot by Ch. Lecocq). A few rare times she also performed in operas, including productions at the Mariinsky Theatre. Her most famous roles are Carmen (G. Bizet's Carmen), Amneris (G. Verdi's Aida), Delilah (C. Saint-Saens' Samson et Dalila (Samson and Delilah)). Contemporaries noted the beauty of Vyaltseva's voice, a strong element of soul in her tone, and the originality of her phrasing. She lived at 84 Moika River Embankment (memorial plaque installed). Owned several buildings on Karpovka River Embankment, which she donated to the city. Buried at Nikolskoe Cemetery of Alexander Nevsky Lavra.
