STRAVINSKY Fedor Ignatievich (1843-1902, St. Petersburg), opera singer (bass). Father of I.F. Stravinsky. In 1869-73 he studied at the Petersburg Conservatory under P. Repeto, E. Viardo, G. Nissen-Saloman, and C. Everardi. He sang at the Kiev Opera for three years, making his debut as Count Rodolfo in The Sleepwalker by V. Bellini. In 1876-1902 he was a soloist at the Mariinsky Theatre. He maintained the school of performance founded by O.A. Petrov, tending to combine singing and drama, and perfectly mastering the vocal technique despite his limited natural abilities (his voice was considered to be dry). He was noted for his mastery of tongue twisters, skill of voice modulation, and breathing technique. He had a gift for dramatic identity, developing a number of new characters for the stage. He was best known for the roles of Farlaf (Ruslan and Lyudmila by M.I. Glinka), Eremka, Holofernes (The Power of the Fiend, Judith by A.N. Serov), Don Basilio and Bartolo (The Barber of Seville by G. Rossini), Sparafucile (Rigoletto by G. Verdi), and Mephistopheles in operas by Ch. Gounod and A. Boito. He performed as a chamber singer, transforming vocal parts into theatre scenes at his concerts. He lived in a State house of the Imperial Theatres at 6 Kryukov Canal Embankment. He was buried at Novodevichye Cemetery; in 1936 his ashes were transferred to the Necropolis of the Masters of Art, where a monument was erected.
