Taglioni Philippe (1777-1871) and Taglioni Marie (1804-1884), ballet artists

Categories / Art/Music, Theatre/Personalia

TAGLIONI Philippe (1777-1871), Italian choreographer, teacher. TAGLIONI Marie (1804-1884), P. Taglioni's daughter, ballet dancer. Both worked at various times under J.F. Coulomb in Paris, Marie also being educated by her father. From 1837 to 1842 they came to St. Petersburg on tour every year. It was here that Philippe Taglioni created his ballets La Sylphide (to music by J. Schneitzhoeffer, staged in 1835), A. Adam's La Fille du Danube (1837), La Gitana by I.F. Schmidt and D.F. Auber (1838), Adam's Le Corsaire (1840), and I.F. Keller's L'Eleve d'Amour (1841). Taglioni's oeuvre represented a supreme achievement in romanticism in ballet. He shifted his accent between graceful and airy movements, while maintaining various arduous lingering poses, which signified the ballerina's plunging into deep thought. Plot in Philippe Taglioni's ballets was usually kept to a minimum, the dancing continuing throughout the entire time of performance, serving as a plastic expression of things too subtle to be rendered by music alone. Taglioni's oeuvre made visible the major theme of German romanticism, striving for the unfeasible dream. La Sylphide anticipated the staging of Giselle (St. Petersburg, 1842). Philippe and Marie Taglioni lived at 6 Nikolskaya Street (now Glinki Street).
