PARADE OF 8 JULY 1945, celebrations held in Leningrad in honour of the Leningrad Guard Infantry Corps (the 45th, 63rd and 64th Guard Rifle Divisions), which were returning to the city from the Baltics. After prolonged marches, the corps camped at Krasnoe Selo and Pulkovo for the night, and on the morning of 8 July, marched triumphantly into the city: the 45th Division, through the Narvskie Triumphal Gates; the 63rd, through the Moscovskie Triumphal Gates; the 64th, from the side of Volodarsky Bridge. Numerous wooden triumphal arches were constructed along their route. Troops proceeded along Nevsky Prospect to Palace Square, where a parade and review were held. The Leningrad Front Standard was carried throughout, which units also carried in the Victory Parade in Moscow. Warplanes, headed by two-time Hero of the Soviet Union, P.A. Pokryshev, flew above the city and the square. After the parade, mass celebrations and fireworks were held.
