S. M. KIROV MUSEUM (26-28 Kamennoostrovsky Avenue), memorial museum, a branch of the State Museum of St. Petersburg History. It was founded in 1938 by the resolution of the Leningrad City and Regional Party committee of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks). The museum was located in the former Kshesinsky mansion and in 1957 was transferred to the house where S. M. Kirov lived from 1926 to 1934. The memorial 5-room apartment shows restored interiors of the dining-room, the library, and the recreation room. The flat was visited, among others, by I. V. Stalin, N. I. Bukharin, V. V. Kuibyshev, G. K. Ordzhonikidze, and K. E. Voroshilov. The museum provides an insight into the life of an influential party leader of the 1920-30s. The museum has some 30,000 exhibits, including Kirov's personal belongings, documents, books, and photographs. One of the halls shows Kirov's reconstructed study in Smolny. A special section is devoted to circumstances of his assassination. The museum also includes an exhibition entitled “Thank you for our happy childhood,” devoted to Leningrad children of the pre-war time. In addition the museum initiated educational programmes such as Story of One Flat and Mystery of an Old House.” Annually the museum is visited by 25,000 people. The museum is located in the former apartment house of the First Russian Insurance Society (1911-14, architect L. N. , Y. Y. , А. N. the Benois and А. I. Gunst) which is a remarkable building in Neo-Classicism style.
