PSYCHIATRICAL HOSPITAL FOR PECULIAR CASES was created in 1951 as part of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. It was housed in the building of the former women’s prison (9 Arsenalnaya Street). People who were admitted to be irresponsible for their actions in the course of legal and psychiatrical examination were transferred to this hospital. In 1951-87 criminals and political prisoners were kept here (including prisoners of conscience V.K. Bukovsky, P.G. Grigorenko, B.D. Evdokimov, and others). In 1987 all the political prisoners were freed. In 1988 the hospital was transferred to the supervision of the Ministry of Health of the USSR, now it is a special psychiatrical hospital with intensive observation.
