PLANETARIUM, located at 4 Alexandrovsky Park, was opened in 1959. It is supplied with state-of-the-art equipment for solar and stellar observations. The St. Petersburg Observatory contains the largest refracting telescope in the city, the projector was produced by Karl Zeis and Foucault's Pendulum companies. The Centre of Scientific Technical Education has been working as part of the Planetarium since 1999. The astronomical society has been functioning since 1960; in 1971, it was renamed the Astronomical School for Youth. Exhibitions and scientific conferences are held in the Planetarium. The Planetarium also has the Museum of Astronomy attached to it. The Gallery-2000 was opened in the building of the Planetarium in 2001. It is here that the Fund of Tey Linshoten (Rotterdam) exhibits works by contemporary Dutch artists. The building of the Planetarium is included in the complex of the former People's House of Emperor Nicholas II (see People's Houses), it was rebuilt in 1959 (architect R. A. Bregman).
