MILITARY PHYSICAL EDUCATION INSTITUTE (63 Bolshoy Sampsonyevsky Avenue) is a higher military educational institution. It prepares officers specialising in physical education and sport. It derives its history from the Petrograd Courses of Physical Training Instructors, created in 1918, and the Major Military Gymnastic Fencing School, which were transformed into the Military Faculty of the State Central Physical Education Institute in 1932. In 1947, the faculty was reformed into the Military Institute of Physical Education and Sport, in 1960 - into a faculty of the Lesgaft Physical Education Institute; in 1974, it became the Military Physical Education Institute. It is situated in the former barracks of the Litovsky Lifeguard Regiment (from the 1850s - the Moskovsky Regiment), which were built in the 1830s.
