ILYIN Lev Alexandrovich (1880-1942), architect, Fellow of the Academy of architecture of the USSR (as of 1941). He studied at the College of Civil Engineers (1897-1909) and at the Academy of Fine Arts (1903-04). He was a member of the Old St. Petersburg Society, one of the main initiators of the creation of the City Museum (1918-35) and its first director. In 1925-38, he was the acting chief architect of Leningrad (nominally, this position appeared in 1938). He was in charge of work of the city planning bureau of the museum; led planning for the General plans of development of Leningrad of 1932-35 and 1935-37 (see The General plans of development of St. Petersburg - Leningrad), was one of the organizers of the Lengiprogor Institute (1929-31), he developed general plans for Baku, Yaroslavl, Petrozavodsk, etc. В 1940-41 he was a director of the Institute of Urban Planning of the Academy of Architecture of the USSR, an architectural theorist, author of numerous scientific works. He was a member of the board of directors of the Leningrad Society of Architects. In the years of the siege he was a scientific adviser and in charge of the assessment group for the Monument Protection Department. His works in Leningrad (in co-authorship) are: bridges, Narodny, Pestelya, Sadovy (all built in 1905-10s), The Peter the Great Hospital (1906-30), his own estate on Aptekarsky Island ( 24 Pesochnaya Embankment, 1911-12, has partly survived), planning of the park on the Spit of Vasilievsky Island and the decoration of the spit of Elagin Island (1925-27), re-planning Bolshoy Avenue of Vasilievsky Island (1925-29), reconstructing and planning Moskovsky Avenue neighbourhood (1933-37), etc. He lived at 52 Fontanka River Embankment. He perished during artillery bombardment, buried at Literatorskie mostki.
