STADIUMS. By the beginning of the 20th century, there were several sport-grounds and football fields in St Petersburg. The Lenin Stadium (1925; now Petrovsky) was Leningrad's first. In 1950, the Kirov Stadium was opened. The former Mikhailovsky Manege building was renovated in 1948 into the Winter Stadium (engineer V.P. Polikarpov), and remains one of the city's oldest sports structures. Over time, all stadiums became associated with large industrial factories (Bolshevik, Krasnaya Zarya, Svetlana, Krasny Vyborzhets, Skorokhod), various institutions and organizations (Leningrad Metro), educational institutions (Technical Forestry Academy), sports societies (Zenit, Dinamo, Spartak, Burevestnik, Lokomotiv etc.), and sport clubs (Bolshevik, Zvezda, Sokol etc.). In 2003, there were over 40 stadiums in St Petersburg, including the Arsenal (51 Metallistov Avenue), the Dinamo (44 Dinamo Avenue), the Admiralteets (5 Barrikadnaya Street), the Baltika (15 Petrovsky Avenue), the Volna (19 Aviatsionnaya Street), the Kirovets (8/6 Perekopskaya Street), the Krasnaya Zarya (16 Lesnoy Avenue), and the Obukhovets (130 Obukhovskoy Oborony Avenue).
