NAVAL CADET CORPS, naval educational institution for training of fleet officers. Started as the School of Navigation and Marine Sciences founded by Peter the Great in Moscow in 1701. The Marine Guard Academy developed in 1715 from the marine classes taught at the school. The Navigation School and the academy merged to become the Naval Noble Cadet Corps in 1752, becoming the Naval Cadet Corps in 1802, the Marine School in 1869, again the Naval Cadet Corps in 1891, the Marine Corps in 1906, and again the Marine School in 1916. The school was divided into cadet (junior) and mid-shipmate classes, and training lasted between four and six years. After finishing their studies, cadets who passed the qualifying exams received a rank of warrant officer. An officers class was opened at the corps in 1827 (see Naval Academy). It was renamed the Navy School after October 1917. The Courses for Command Personnel of the Republic Navy were created on its basis in 1918; they were later re-organised into the Higher Navy School (today the Navy Institute). From 1752 on, the corps were situated in the former palace of Ch. A. Minich (today 17 Lieutenant Schmidt Embankment, rebuilt in 1796-98, architect F.I. Volkov). They were moved to Kronstadt after the fire of 1771, and returned in the 1790s. Group memorial plaques are installed along the building, bearing the names of fleet commanders and mariners of the 18th - 19th centuries, as well as admirals who graduated from the Higher Navy School.
