ADMIRALTEISKY DISTRICT, (Admiralty) an administrative territorial unit of St. Petersburg (Its territory administration is located at 10 Izmailovsky Avenue), is one of the central districts of the city. It was formed in 1994 by merging Leninsky and Oktyabrsky districts. It was named after the former Admiralty Police Department and the Main Admiralty. It is located between the Bolshaya Neva River, the Obvodny Canal and partially to the south of the latter, where it borders on Moskovsky and Kirovsky districts (to the south-west). It borders on Central District on the east. It is connected with Vasilievsky Island with Lieutenant Schmidt Bridge. The area of the district is 13.8 sq.km (the smallest in St. Petersburg) with the population of 181,100 people (2003). There are six municipal division located at the district's territory, including Sennoy okrug, Izmailovskoye, Kolomna, Admiralteysky okrug, municipal okrugs Nos. 4 and 6. The district's history is closely connected with the history of the Russian fleet. The naval history of the district is reflected in the names of its streets, including Bolshaya and Malaya Morskaya, Galernaya, and Lotsmanskaya (Pilot) Streets. The building started in 1704 with the construction of the shipyard and Admiralty Fortress to protect the latter. By the middle of the 18th century, quarters along the Neva River between the Admiralty and Galley Yard, and Naval quarter (along present-day Bolshaya Morskaya Street) were built-up with stone buildings. The present-day planning of the territory located to the north of the Obvodny Canal was formed in the early 19th century. The "industrial belt" along the Obvodny Canal was formed in the second half of the 19th century due to railroad construction. The district has five metro stations, including Baltiyskaya, Tekhnologichesky Institut, Pushkinskaya, Frunzenskaya, and Sennaya Ploschad-Sadovaya; and three railway stations, including Vitebsky, Baltiysky and Varshavsky. The following rivers flow through the district: Moika, Fontanka and Pryazhка, and canals: Griboyedova, Kryukov, Obvodny, et al. A lot of cultural and tourist attractions are located in the territory of the district, including Mariinsky Theatre, the Theatre of Young Spectators named after Alexander Bryantsev, Conservatory, St. Isaac's Cathedral, and the Manezh Central Exhibition Hall.
