LITERACY SOCIETY of St. Petersburg, created in 1896 on the basis of the dissolved Literacy Committee. The Society functioned under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Public Education. Initially, the society led nominal existence, in the early 1900s, the society became more active. The Literacy Society published books and brochures (with a total run of over 700,000 copies), had a book store and a shop. The Society founded schools beyond Narva border, in Smolenskoe village and Sestroretsk. In 1909, it reopened the Pedagogical Library with over 11,000 volumes. In 1912-14, the Society published Questions of Public Education Journal. The society was housed in the building of Sixth Gymnasium (5 Teatralnaya Street, today Zodchego Rossi Street).
